Although RISD campus sidewalks and parking lots are in good shape, Rhode Island roads generally are not. For this reason, we are concerned about the overall safety of our campus community and will be closed Wednesday, January 28, 2015. All classes are canceled. We will re-open as normal on Thursday, January 29th.
Academic buildings, including the Library, will re-open tomorrow for personal student use. Shops will be closed.
The Met and Portfolio will be open tomorrow from 10 AM until 9 PM. Jolly Roger, Watermark and Carr Haus will be closed.
As always, selected employees who provide essential services are expected to report to work even when RISD is closed. The departments affected include Facilities, Dining, Residence Life, Facilities, Public Safety, and Central Control Dispatchers. Depending on the circumstances, other personnel may also be required to report to work. If you are unsure if your position is designated as essential, please consult with your supervisor.
Again, my many thanks to the Facilities, Dining, Public Safety and Residence Life staff members who have stayed on campus for the past 36 hours to serve our students. We realize this may have been a personal hardship and appreciate your commitment to our community.
Thank you to our many staff members who are on campus today taking care of our students and our campus.
We are continuing to watch the weather forecast and the Rhode Island government advisories. A travel ban and blizzard warning are still in effect through late this evening.
Given the conditions, we are not yet able to determine if it will be safe to reopen tomorrow. We are expecting an update from the Governor and we hope to make a determination soon after that.
We will inform you about tomorrow as soon as possible via email. Updates will also be available at emergency.risd.edu. All RISD websites – including risd.edu, RISD’s main Facebook page and the institutional Twitter feed – will direct to emergency.risd.edu.
Many thanks for your continued patience.
Dear RISD Community:
As you know, the National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning effective today at 7:00 PM through Wednesday, January 28 at 1:00 AM. Therefore, we are currently planning to close RISD academic buildings and administrative offices and cancel classes effective 6:00PM today and throughout Tuesday. This timeframe was determined in part to meet the needs of today’s Wintersession classes. Should the City of Providence mandate an earlier closing, or we feel one is appropriate, we will be in touch with you immediately. RISD CE has cancelled classes effective 5:00 PM tonight and all classes for tomorrow.
As always, the safety of our community is our first priority and we understand our employees have a variety of commuting distances. If you feel you need to leave campus earlier than what is expected, please speak with your supervisor. If you are a faculty member and need to adjust your class schedule, please speak with your Department Head and communicate directly with your students.
We will continue to monitor the forecast and will make a decision about reopening on Wednesday as soon as we are able. This decision will depend on a number of factors including campus and city snow removal, City of Providence directives and other safety precautions.
Thank you in advance to the essential personnel who will remain on campus to provide necessary services to our students and campus community. These selected employees are expected to report to work even when RISD is closed. Generally, the departments affected include Facilities, Dining, Public Safety, Residence Life and Central Control Dispatchers. Depending on the circumstances, other personnel may also be required to report to work. If you are unsure if your position is designated as essential, please consult with your supervisor.
A special note to students: We will send a separate email with more information about the storm and campus services later today.
As always, RISD’s Public Safety officers are on duty for any security calls (401 454-6376) or emergency medical calls (401 277-4848).
Any further updates will be shared via email and also be available at emergency.risd.edu. All RISD websites – including risd.edu, RISD’s main Facebook page and the institutional Twitter feed – will direct to emergency.risd.edu.
If you have not already done so, make certain your emergency contact information is up to date on WebAdvisor so that we can share updates with you as quickly as possible.
